Stedi

The only API-first programmable clearinghouse — 3,500+ payers with built-in redundancy.

Overview

Stedi is doing something different. While legacy clearinghouses were built around batch file transfers and web portals from the early 2000s, Stedi built a clearinghouse from the ground up around modern REST APIs and JSON. The result is a platform where every transaction — eligibility checks, claim submissions, ERA retrieval, claim status — is programmable and automatable.

Stedi connects to 3,500+ payers with built-in redundancy through 3,400+ route connections. The platform integrates with every major clearinghouse behind the scenes, automatically routing claims through the best available path to each payer. If one route goes down, claims automatically route through an alternate connection — no manual failover needed.

Stedi is particularly strong for billing companies and tech-forward practices that want to build automated workflows. The developer experience is excellent — clear documentation, sandbox testing, and dedicated Slack or Teams channels for support. For practices that just want a portal to submit claims manually, Stedi offers that too, but the real value is in the automation.

Pros & Cons

Strengths

  • API-first architecture. Modern REST APIs with JSON responses — no ancient SFTP-only workflows or clunky web portals. Every transaction is programmable and automatable.
  • Built-in redundancy. 3,400+ route connections across multiple clearinghouses. If one path fails, claims automatically route through an alternate connection. No manual failover needed.
  • Broadest payer coverage. 3,500+ medical and dental payers — the broadest coverage of any clearinghouse. Stedi integrates with every major clearinghouse and builds direct payer connections wherever possible.
  • Transparent pricing. Published pricing with a free tier. No sales calls required, no hidden fees, no long-term contracts.
  • Exceptional support. Dedicated Slack or Teams channels for support. Clear API documentation and sandbox testing environment. Integration takes days, not months.

Weaknesses

  • Newer company. Founded in 2019 with less track record than legacy clearinghouses. Growing fast but still proving at enterprise scale.
  • Best value requires technical comfort. The portal works fine for manual submission, but the real power is in the API. Practices without technical resources may not fully leverage the platform.
  • Growing integration directory. Platform partner directory is expanding but has fewer pre-built PM integrations than TriZetto or Waystar. May require API or SFTP configuration.
  • No bundled RCM tools. Stedi is a clearinghouse, not a revenue cycle platform. No denial management dashboards or AI prediction — just clean, fast, reliable claim routing.

EMR Integrations

Stedi integrates with many EMR and practice management systems, including:

  • Any system via REST API or SFTP
  • Canvas Medical
  • Healthie
  • Omnipractice
  • Various behavioral health and specialty EHRs via Platform Partners directory
